The NCMHCE stands between many counseling graduates and independent licensure, so it is no surprise that the exam forums are full of nerves. If you read them, the same four worries come up again and again. Each one has a practical fix.
Problem 1: Feeling nervous and not knowing where to start
When the test date is close, “study everything” is not a plan.

The fix: turn one huge exam into small topics and give each a short slot in your week. Our deck sorts its 800 cards into eight categories: clinical assessment and diagnosis, crisis and risk assessment, DSM-5 disorders and criteria, counseling and psychotherapy, ethics, law and professional practice, human development and psychopathology, diversity and cultural competence, and treatment planning. Pick one category a day, review a small batch, and you always know what “done for today” looks like.
Problem 2: Not being sure what the exam covers
Counselors preparing for licensure often mix up the two national exams.

The fix: start with the source, not a forum. The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) describes the NCMHCE as an exam of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to provide effective counseling services, and says it is required for licensure in many states. NBCC also notes that its exam pages will be updated as information about a new 2027 exam becomes available, so check the official handbook for your state and test date. Flashcards cover the content; they do not replace the official exam information.
Problem 3: Not knowing what actually works
Passing candidates are generous with advice, and what they say they would change is worth reading.

The fix: use methods with research behind them. Quizzing yourself (practice testing) and spreading your reviews over days and weeks (spaced practice) are both rated high-utility study techniques in learning research (Dunlosky et al., 2013). Flashcards do both almost by accident. Here are two real cards from our deck:
Ethics, law and professional practice
What steps should a counselor take when they realize a dual relationship with a client is unavoidable?
The counselor must take immediate measures to discuss the dual relationship with the client, assess potential risks, and seek supervision or consultation to manage boundaries effectively.Treatment planning
How can a counselor effectively set a SMART goal for a client struggling with anxiety?
A counselor can help the client set a SMART goal by ensuring it is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, such as practicing daily deep breathing exercises for 5 minutes over the next two weeks to reduce anxiety levels.
Problem 4: The pressure of having to retake
Some candidates are on their second or third attempt, and the waiting is hard.
“need help- NCMHCE, 3rd time. Desperate.”

The fix: be specific about where the gaps are. When you study by category, you quickly see which topics you keep missing. Put those cards back into tomorrow’s batch and again a few days later, instead of re-reading everything. A short daily session you can keep up beats a long one you dread. If a topic stays hard, pair the cards with your textbook, a supervisor or a study group.
